What do you pack? For a weekend away or a proper holiday, a list is a must! A summer dress, a kaftan, bermuda shorts, a linen shirt...
Come on, we're nearly there! Even though the to-do list feels endless right now, the day will come when I get to write one of my favourite messages: my Out of Office!
Usually, I'm so happy that I feel like adding little fun bits like:
Dear all,
I'll be on holiday from... to... I really hope you can also enjoy some relaxation, but seriously, tell me what you're packing for your holiday this summer, because I absolutely can't wait to wear that pointelle knit skirt I have, which you can dress down during the day with flat slides, but in the evening it looks amazing if you pair it with silver mirror-effect sandals...
Since I'm a bit of a timid soul, in the end I always stick to the standard formalities, even though I'm still curious to know what your must-haves are for your summer getaways. (And early summer weekends count too, by the way – in fact, those are even more exciting because you cram everything into just two days).
Travelling a lot for work, I've now gained some expertise on the topic of 'packing light', because I hate bringing back unworn clothes which still need washing anyway (not to mention the waits at the baggage carousel at the airport or the risk of hitting fellow passengers over the head with a massive bag!).
What would you pack?
You can find loads of tutorials online on how to fold, bag, and pack clothes without ruining them and taking up little space, but here I invite you to consider the almost philosophical side of pack & go. The absolute number one rule, the essential, the mother of all rules is: take your time, and it doesn't matter if it's 11 pm and you're leaving at the crack of dawn the next morning. Open your wardrobe and ask yourself a few questions. Where are you going? What kind of trip are you on? Are you planning any social events?
For example, I like a wild & easy kind of holiday, with a loose, cool seersucker shirt for the beach, a kaftan perhaps in striped cotton poplin with lovely red embroidery on the yoke for a barefoot aperitif, but I never leave without an evening outfit, because you never know, you might get invited to a nice party.
With the pale green georgette dress featuring long sleeves open all the way down the arm to reveal sun-kissed skin, you're guaranteed to look stunning, and if it's a really special evening, I style it with maxi earrings. Another trick I'm proud of is opting for very stylish one-piece swimsuits, like a lovely black one-shoulder with contrasting white trim, so I just need to slip on a pair of twill trousers with crochet embroidery on the hem, pop on some low-heeled straw clogs, and the trip to the flower market is sorted perfectly.
So, don't rush me when I'm packing. Holiday is also about not having to worry about 'what to wear', because I've thought it through properly and I travel with my personal summer essentials. If you're one of those who just throw a bit of everything in just in case, try following my method this time. I bet you'll thank me later, want to bet?
