Let’s put on our shirts

Pop quiz. You’ve won a dream trip (I’ll be generous, you can choose if you’re going to a city of art, a tropical atoll, Provence in bloom or a thawing mountain), but you have to leave in less than two hours. What is the one item you absolutely must have in your suitcase?

If it were up to me, I’d have no doubts: a shirt, no matter where you’re going.

Maybe you instinctively think of denims, but think about it, you wouldn’t go out to dinner in them at the Monkey Bar in Berlin, and imagine how hot you would be if you wore them in Bali? But a shirt is a piece you can wear always and everywhere,

from an exploratory bike tour of the city to a hike at high altitude, thrown over a thermal layer on your skin. Not to mention walks on the beach at sunset, with your shirt draped nonchalantly over your swimsuit.

The white version is one of ten things I will never get tired of in life; it’s fresh, charming, timeless, but recently I’ve been obsessed with light blue shirts.

I think many of us have, at least once in our lives, stolen a light blue Oxford shirt from our boyfriends, brothers, friends and fathers, but it’s a staple worth getting for your wardrobe in a cut, fit and proportions made especially for us. And then, the baby blue lends itself to multiple interpretations, in seersucker styled with long sleeves just below the elbow, or a more romantic version with a mandarin collar trimmed with a little ruching matching the cuffs.

It instantly becomes the perfect base for highlighting elegant golden trellis motifs or cheerful bandana patterns. On second thoughts, I’m enthralled by pink vibes too, perhaps with a nice striped pattern with tone-on-tone embroidery, and solid mustard yellow, which also doesn’t mess around in terms of style.

Although, an impeccable white shirt, unbuttoned just enough to feel sexy, worn with an evening skirt, high heels and a luxurious clutch, makes a strong fashion statement. This is how Sharon Stone wore it to the 1998 Oscars ceremony, and from that night everything changed for white shirts…
